The SPC Logo

(C) 2008 Syracuse Press Club.

The Syracuse Press Club's original logo conveyed an image of strength and dignity: Strength of a free press in the shape of a shield; and dignity of the news media through the "old style" lettering. The logo, left, was further enhanced with a background of a newspaper page and pictures of a television camera and radio microphone.

The logo was designed by Post-Standard artist Wallace H. Campbell. Former SPC President Bob Greabell made it come to life when he made two out of wood to hang in the new club rooms and auditorium at Midtown Plaza in 1962.

Another incarnation of the logo was a simpler shield, right, used on stationery and SPC publications.

In 1986, the Press Club Board wanted a fresh, new image to show the SPC was still a vibrant organization. WIXT artist Dennis Calkins responded with several sketches. The final design, at right, is based upon a typewriter's font

It is that final design that formed the basis for the 50th Anniversary logo used during 2001.
